May 2011: Rebecca is a bright girl. She lives with her aunt and uncle, as her parents have passed away of AIDS. Her younger brothers, Denis and Nicholas, live in the village with their grandfather, and one of them is also HIV+. Her grandmother has moved from the village to live in the house with Rebecca as she has been ill. Also in the house are Rebecca's cousins. The little ones are Barbara (10), Mercy (7), and Arthur (4). She has older cousins who also live in the house with their children, so it is quite packed. Her uncle works in the security sector in Iraq. He is the younger brother of her late father. When he is home, Rebecca is treated well, but when he is in Iraq, her aunt is cruel to her.

Rebecca wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Her best friend is Apio Betty. Her aunt would not allow her to go on the field trips this month to the Nile River or to Wonder World, so instead we took her on a special trip to the market, where we bought her an outfit and took her out to lunch. School is very important to Rebecca, and she studies hard at Luzira. It is an hour walk to Luzira, so we may be sending her to St. Mary's next year, which just opened and would mean only 15-20 minutes walk instead of 60.
