May 2011: Darphine is a very shy girl. When you first meet her, she will barely say a word, and when she does, you have to put your ear right next to her mouth so you can hear her. But she is super sweet, and very kind. She is always eager to help, and likes to spend time with us volunteers when all the other kids go off to play! Darphine went on 2 field trips this month. First, she went alone with us to Sseko Design, a fair trade shoe company that focuses on secondary graduates and helping them make money to save for University. We hoped it would be inspirational for her. Next, we went to Wonder World, an amusement park. Darphine was quite brave on the rides (most of the other girls except her cried on the scary ones) and she LOVED going swimming. Usually quiet, she was the loudest, craziest kid in the pool and the huge smile didn't leave her face. Darphine doesn't know her age. She says she is 12, but in the past has been recorded as being 14. Many kids here don't know their ages, and the other kids in her class are 14 and 15, so it is likely that 12 is not correct.
Darphine is enjoying her school, but because of the distance, it is likely that we will transfer her next year to St. Mary's, which is right behind CUS. Her favourite subject is biology and she wants to be a doctor when she grows up. She tells us she would like to study in Canada. Darphine lives with her mother and grandmother, who are both very young. Her grandmother was an alcoholic but seems to be more stable now.

June 2011: Shortly after writing the previous post, Hellen met with Darphine and her grandmother and they made the decision to transfer to St. Mary's. Darphine will be starting Term 2 at St. Mary's on Monday June 6th.
